Why did you choose Comm Studies as your major?

I wanted to work in broadcasting, and I knew that the Communication Studies curriculum would prepare me for the media industry. Plus, being a Comm. Studies major would give me access to a great network, which I knew could help me in finding a job after school.

Favorite UCLA memory and/or professor:

I cherish so many memories from my time at UCLA, but I definitely have two that I will NEVER forget. One, was the moment I was accepted. Two, delivering the student speech at our 2006 Communication Studies Graduation.

How has Comm Studies empowered you in your professional and personal life?

My time as a Comm. Studies major really taught me to work hard and think outside of the box. Those are skills I apply to my professional life every day.

What was the most valuable or applicable lesson you learned from a Comm Studies class?

One of the ongoing lessons I learned from my Comm. Studies classes, was that the media and entertainment industry are ever evolving. On top of that, being a Bruin taught me to love learning. Both of those lessons have been very valuable. In the short amount of time that I've been working in the media industry, I have noticed how much it has evolved. Terrestrial radio competes with things like Pandora now. Every job requires you to have social media skills. News reporters have to know how to report and shoot video. The industry is different today, than when I first started. You just have to be open to the changes and be open to learning constantly.

What advice would you give to a current Comm Studies student?

Intern, intern, intern! This is your chance to try on all kinds of professional hats. Find out which one fits best now! After graduation, it's a little more challenging. Plus, internships will not only help you network, they also get your foot in the door.
